Being World Vegan Day it’s a particular pleasure to announce that succeeding Greenwoods as Best Restaurant of the Month is Soland. Here’s the low down.
The recent surge of new all vegan restos in HK of course is warmly welcomed. There are a few places though that have been steadfastly serving all vegan food here for a decent while. Soland is one of the longest running all vegan eateries in HK having operated for seven years.
At Soland don’t expect highly financed marketing, promotion nor PR. Instead it’s low key with focus completely on food values that matter to Soland:-
- Healthy for each of people, animals and the environment
It’s a midweek day lunch only fixed menu in a set up with 25 seats (closed on holidays). The small info sheet on each table explains there’s no microwave, frying, MSG, egg, milk, mushroom nor corn starch. The lady quietly offers a soup, main & a drink at 55 HK bucks with an option of raw cake for an extra 45 dollars.
Soland has a commendable food waste avoidance policy with a set amount of food each day. That combined with a dedicated customer base, please book in advance. Otherwise if you just show up you seriously risk being declined a seat without fuss. This is speaking from personal experience. Food waste in the 21st century is a disgrace so total respect to Soland for that. There’s no plans from this place for global domination so don’t expect the place to expand soon. Thus to stress again if you are going to give it a try, please… book in advance. Otherwise you may well waste time and effort going there. It’s also slightly tricky to find for a first visit. Thus if you go please see the directions below.
